Trekking Safety Tips From An Expert

Before planning a trek, one should always consider few things which is extremly important.

01. Best Time to Visit

  • Pre and Post monsoon.

  • Day treks are always safer and better especially if you are planning to take kids along.

  • Incase you are planning to trek during the monsoons then you need to be well geared up as the trekking path gets tough and difficult. If there are any waterfalls or streams on the trail, you may not be able to gauge the volume of water, thereby making the trek further challenging.

2. Expert’s Help

  • Seek an expert’s help or join a professionally organized group as they are well- versed with the pros and cons and can guide you accordingly.

  • Always be attentive to the leader’s instructions.

3. Difficulty Level

  • Find out if that particular trek is suitable for your age and always measure the difficulty level (easy, moderate, and challenging)

4. Packing the Essentials

It is always advisable to carry a water proof trekking backpack with several pockets and cushioned shoulder straps.

Trekking checklist:

  • First Aid Kit

  • Light and healthy snacks.

  • Sufficient drinking water and Glucon- D to keep you hydrated.

  • Windcheater

  • Extra pair of clothes incase you are going for an overnight trek or you get drenched.

  • A map, compass and a pocket diary listing emergency numbers.

  • A pocket torch with an extra batteries.

  • A swiss knife and a lighter.

  • A suntan lotion

  • Zip lock cases to keep mobiles, cash, cards.

  • A personal kit comprising sanitizer, tissue papers and an insect repellant.

5. The Right Clothes & Footwear

  • Wear light cotton clothes which can dry quickly.

  • You can also wear water proof clothes to avoid getting drenched.

  • High neck trekking shoes.

6. Instruct Your Kid

  • Instruct your children about the do’s and don’t of trekking.

  • Please be extra attentive with regards to their safety.

  • Keep a small diary with emergency numbers in their pockets or bags.

7. Inform Your Family & Friends

  • Leave a trail behind.

  • Inform your family and friends about your whereabouts and whom to contact in case there is an emergency and your phone is not reachable for some reason.
